EA acquires Plants vs Zombies maker Popcap

ea_popcapEA has announced today that it has acquired the company responsible for casual games like Plants vs Zombies, Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle; Popcap Games.
The deal supposedly is worth over a billion in cash and stock.

What this means for the future of Popcap is unknown. It could very well be that they remain “independent” in a way that they keep deciding on what games to make, but it’s also very well possible that more EA branded Popcap games will appear.

EA and PopCap are a compelling combination. PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA’s global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels.
